Attorney Vonya Quarles will outline the new laws affecting the sentences of current prison inmates at Save Our Sons Prison Ministry meeting on Sunday, October 15, at 2:30 p.m.

Her presentation, which will cover legislation such as Propositions 47, 57 62, 63, 66 and SB 261, will be held at Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 3740 Don Felipe Dr., in Los Angeles. The Rev. Royce Porter is the senior pastor.

A veteran advocate of improving the prison system, Quarles brings a unique perspective to the topic as she described herself as “a formerly incarcerated woman who is the daughter of a formerly incarcerated woman.” She has a long history of pushing to transform the system to focus more on prevention and rehabilitation and less on incarceration.

Quarles is also the executive director of Starting Over Inc., an organization that provides transitional housing for people newly released from prison and individuals in need.
