About 10 years ago, Lamont Sanders was deep into the R&B scene. His music was getting noticed, he landed more club dates, and he developed an aggressive, ‘I want it now’ lifestyle.
In his mind, he was on his way to the top until trouble hit hard and he realized it was his own fault.
“I didn’t get jail time, but I was faced with jail time for being a knucklehead, “ recalled Sanders. “I had put myself in things and God allowed me to go through. But even going through, you had to come out.”
Emerging from that situation, Sanders decided to develop a ministry based on his personal testimony that “no matter what you’ve done, no matter what you’ve been through, God’s grace is still sufficient.”
The singer’s new outlook is apparent in recently released single, “Whatever It Takes,” which was produced and written by Gerald and Tammi Haddon, and KJ Scriven. The catchy-upbeat lyrics proclaim his unwavering commitment to God and determination to praise Him in every form possible. Sanders hopes his music, which he describes as pop gospel, will inspire people who may feel God doesn’t care about them.
“[I want to be] that Christian soundtrack for those who feel like God is not looking their way or who feel the church has ostracized them or just that record people can put on and still feel church,” he explained.
“One of the biggest things we’ve had as people is having our own goals and dreams and not seeking God to see what He has for us to do. Our dreams may be different, but if God called you to do it, He’ll bring you through it.”
Among the dreams God fulfilled for Sanders was performing this past year at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ “Megafest,” the GMWA Convention and the “I Hear Music in the Air Conference.” The hand of the Lord continues to guide him as he works to complete his album along with writing music for Dorinda Clark-Cole’s new album.
Sanders’ relationship with Christ keeps him grounded and focused on the ministry God has given him. And when circumstances appear difficult, he turns to his favorite scripture, Philippians 1:6 – “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”
“We go through life and we try to give our best to everything. You have to believe that God is with you and He will complete it. Nothing can actually be done without him. So, we [must] believe that and lean on Him. Remember that our time is not God’s time. Patience is important,” advised Sanders.
