Walter Payton, often known as “Sweetness,” was a football legend who left an incredible mark on the game. The iconic running back amazed fans with his incredible speed, agility, and determination on the field. Whether breaking records or giving back to the community, Payton’s impact on and off the field remains a legacy that continues to inspire athletes and fans alike.
Payton’s football journey began in Mississippi where he attended Jackson State University from 1971 to 1974. At Jackson State, Payton was named Little All-American twice. After an outstanding collegiate career, Payton was selected by the Chicago Bears as the fourth overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft. He went on to play only with Chicago for 13 seasons. Payton helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX in 1985.
In Chicago, Payton won multiple awards including the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award (1977), League MVP (1977), and NFL rushing yards leader (1977). He also earned five All-Pro First Team selections and nine Pro Bowl selections along with other awards accomplished throughout his professional career. Payton retired at the end of the 1987 season.

Although Walter Payton was a star-studded football player, many remember him for his philanthropic efforts during and after his playing career. Every year, the NFL gives out the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award to recognize a player who not only excels in football but also shows dedication to helping others and making a positive impact in the community. Each NFL team chooses one player as a Man of the Year nominee and gets a chance to win the award. The yearly award winner gets a $250,000 donation for their chosen charity. Each of the 32 nominees also gets a donation of up to $55,000 for their charity, all thanks to the NFL Foundation and Nationwide. Payton won the NFL Man of the Year in 1977 and shortly after his passing, the award was renamed to honor his legacy.
At a young age, Payton was instilled to help others and give back to those who paved the way for him.

The Walter Payton Foundation continued its work after his passing in 1999, carrying on his legacy by supporting charitable endeavors that align with Payton’s values and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
