Says Shonte Penland Abraham, Esq., Event Chair, “My mother, Gertrude Gipson Penland, founded this organization 60 years ago because she saw a need to provide support for African Americans, particularly those from underserved communities—and she did it with flair! From yacht and garden soirees, to grand events at Ciros, the Playboy Mansion and the iconic Cocoanut Grove, she and the Regalettes sisterhood found innovative ways to raise money and creative ways to advance the African American agenda. This year’s event will be no exception. We are giving away scholarships and honoring individuals who have made a difference in our communities.”
Over the years, the Regalettes have provided financial support to organizations such as the Spastic Children’s Foundation, Southwest Community College, STEM and girls mentoring programs as well as participated in toy and turkey giveaways to families and children in need. Additionally, the group has given close to a million dollars in scholarships to deserving students.
The title sponsor of the 60th anniversary gala is South Coast Air Quality Management District. Other supporters include US Bank, Telacu, Sandra Evers-Manley, the California Water Association, California Bank & Trust, Shonte Penland Abraham and Reve Gipson Parks.
