For many high school seniors, prom is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone—an evening filled with excitement, elegance, and lasting memories.

However, for some students facing financial hardships, the cost of attending can feel like an impossible hurdle. That’s where the Positive Results Center (PRC) steps in.

Led by Kandee Lewis, CEO, PRC is dedicated to ensuring that no student misses out on this unforgettable experience. Each year, the nonprofit hosts its Annual Prom Dress Gift Away, a special event where students can select prom attire—free of charge—to make their dream night a reality.

Set to take place on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Douglas F. Dollarhide Community Center in Compton, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

“We call it a ‘Gift Away’ because we believe every young person deserves the best—regardless of their circumstances,” Lewis told the Sentinel.

Transforming the venue into a boutique-style shopping experience, PRC ensures that each student can browse through a stunning selection of gowns, tuxedos, elegant accessories, and personal hygiene products—all curated with care.

“Everything looks like a shopping center,” Lewis explained. “We want this to be a beautiful experience.”

Beyond providing attire, PRC is dedicated to empowering young people with confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging.

“Prom is more than just a night of celebration—it’s an opportunity for young people to feel seen, valued, and confident in their own skin,” Lewis said.

“With the support of our community, we can ensure that no student misses out on this milestone due to financial hardship.”

PRC’s reach extends beyond Los Angeles, creating a nationwide support system for youth wellness and relationship success. Through partnerships with K-12 schools, colleges, healthcare organizations, and law enforcement agencies, the nonprofit provides critical resources to address trauma, promote healthy relationships, and support BIPOC youth and adults.

“In 2024, over 1,000 attendees benefited from our community resource fair, with volunteers contributing more than 1,590 hours to making the event a success,” PRC shared.

PRC relies on the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers to make the Annual Prom Dress Gift Away a reality. The organization is currently accepting:

  • New or gently used formal gowns, women’s tuxedos, evening bags, and jewelry
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Financial donations to help cover event logistics

“Just because we take donations doesn’t mean we accept anything,” Lewis emphasized. “If it’s not top-tier material, we won’t take it. We want every student to feel special.”

Sponsorship opportunities are also available for businesses and individuals who want to make a direct impact on students’ lives.

While the Prom Dress Gift Away provides students with elegant attire, PRC’s mission goes far deeper. The organization is committed to creating culturally specific awareness to prevent and end trauma caused by domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual assault.

By equipping young people with essential life skills, support networks, and resources, PRC helps them build healthy relationships and bright futures—long after prom night ends.

As Lewis and her dedicated team continue their work, one thing remains clear: PRC isn’t just giving away dresses—they’re giving students the confidence to shine, the empowerment to dream, and the support to succeed.
