Over the years, I’ve recognized times when my desire to do something perfectly held me back from even trying to pursue a good idea. How many times have you felt paralyzed because you wondered whether you could do a good job—or even be perfect at it? Thinking you always have to be perfect can prevent you from reaching your true potential. Many of us never get out of the gate because we’re too afraid of failing, so we don’t even begin something we’ve been dreaming of for years.
Most successful people have failed repeatedly before they succeeded. Remember when your mother told you, “If you fail, just try again”? She knew what she was talking about. Don’t let your insecurities hold you back. Success could be waiting just beyond your last mistake.
Several factors often hold people back from achieving their highest good. The question we must ask ourselves is whether these are genuine concerns—or simply excuses. When imposter syndrome sneaks in, we begin to doubt ourselves and what we believe we can achieve. The best way to overcome this fear is to do the necessary work and research to fully understand the field or area you are pursuing.
We often doubt ourselves when we’re unprepared or lack the knowledge needed, which feeds insecurity and fuels the fear of failure. But remember: Mistakes are inevitable. That doesn’t make you a failure. Learn from them and keep moving forward. Nothing is final until you give up.
Another reason we delay progress is overthinking, which can cause “analysis paralysis.” We become stuck in a cycle of second-guessing every decision, making no progress at all. This often leads to procrastination. How many times have you doubted yourself to the point where you tackle everything else on your to-do list—things you feel confident you can complete—while telling yourself you’ll get to the real task tomorrow?
Stop it. Face whatever is holding you back today. There’s no time like now. Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is not promised and today is a gift. The gift of the present is powerful—and it’s all we can control.
Make sure you’re not your own worst enemy. Focusing too much on being perfect can cause you to miss opportunities because your head is down and you’re not looking in the right direction. You might also stifle your creativity, become frustrated, or burn out.
Putting unnecessary pressure on yourself is exhausting and creates self-doubt. It’s important to stay the course, keep a positive mindset, and remember that everything worthwhile takes time before breakthroughs happen.
As Jack Canfield says, “Belief in yourself is a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you have faith in your ability to show up and get results, you will become that person and experience better outcomes in everything you do.”
It’s never too late for a fresh start. Stop letting perfectionism paralyze the potential inside you. Do one thing today to get back on the path to the life you dream of.
Healing Without Hate: It’s a choice. It’s a lifestyle. Pass it on.
