The goddaughter of Olivia Hooker of White Plains, New York, Janis Porter, says Hooker died Wednesday at her home. She was 103.
A cause of death was not given and Porter said Hooker has no living relatives. Porter said Hooker is one of the last known survivors of the violence.
Hooker was 6 when the May 31-June 1 riot destroyed much of a Tulsa neighborhood called “Black Wall Street.” She said in an NPR interview earlier this year that she hid under a table as a mob of torch-carrying people destroyed the belongings inside the home.
The violence began after a Black man allegedly assaulted a White woman in an elevator. The number of deaths were never confirmed and vary from about three dozen to 300.
