The anticipation is building as New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church prepares for Legacy Weekend 2016.
The celebration begins on Sunday, August 21, at 7:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., as Pastor Sonja R. Dawson and the congregation observe Founder’s Day honoring the contributions and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson and First Lady Emeritus Mamie P. Dawson, who organized the fellowship.
“We give all honor and glory to God for allowing Rev. Dr. Lonnie Dawson to labor in the vineyard at New Mount Calvary for over forty-eight years,” said a spokesperson. “We are delighted to acknowledge Dr. and First Lady Emeritus Dawson’s dedication to the preaching and teaching of God’s word, their cultivation of members’ spiritual growth and development, and their loving relationship towards each other, New Mount Calvary, and the community at-large.”
A visionary, educator, leader, and international missionary, Dr. Dawson developed one of the largest Sunday school departments in Los Angeles, authored several books on Sunday school growth, and founded the Church Leadership Training Institute (C.L.T.I) of the LAX Urban Center (formerly known as Crescent Bay West Los Angeles Association).
In addition, the church will host the 2nd Annual Legacy Awards Celebration at 3 p.m., which will recognize 10 trailblazer members who worked tirelessly alongside Dr. and Lady Dawson in the establishment and expansion of the NMC ministry.
