The Museum of African American Art (MAAA), located on the 3rd Floor of Macy’s, in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, is celebrating its 40th Anniversary and presenting a Gala on Saturday, February 27, from 4:30pm – 7:30pm, at the Museum.  The entire community is invited to obtain tickets, enjoy the celebration, and support the ongoing, good works of the Museum.

Actress and MAAA supporter Wendy Raquel Robinson, will emcee.

Guests at the Gala will honor MAAA Founder and Art Benefactors: Dr. Samella Lewis, Winifred Hervey, and posthumously, former Board President, Harvey Lehman and the Lehman Family.  Browse the artworks of Harlem Renaissance painter, Palmer Hayden and meet contemporary artist, Synthia Saint James.  Bid silently on an array of fantastic items for auction.  There will be signature ‘art-tinis’ to sip and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres to enjoy.  Listen to the brilliant sounds of the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA). Snap their fingers, tap their feet and dance to the R&B sounds of Seville.  Sponsors for the MAAA Gala include: Macy’s, Time Warner Cable, Northrop Grumman, US Bank, AT&T, The Gas Company, and Union Bank.

For forty years, the MAAA has been offering free admission, welcoming thousands of visitors of all backgrounds and age groups, especially school children from the neighboring community, into the museum.  It presents engaging and relevant exhibitions in which artists and their art inspire public discourse about issues and experiences of people throughout the African diaspora.

In recent years, the numbers of children and field trips to the MAAA have increased steadily, as art lessons in school classrooms have decreased.  Families, teachers and children have come to also learn that the MAAA is a great place in their community for both seeing and creating art, as well as for learning about science, technology, engineering, art and math, by attending (STEAM) workshops presented free at the museum.   The MAAA is open Thursday to Sunday, Noon to 5:00pm.  Plan to attend the Gala and make contributions to the MAAA, a 501(c) 3, non-profit.
