Have you ever sat and wondered why people with more melanin experience the most hatred in society?
Jade Asikiwe’s “Melanin Empath” argues that the reason lies within their melanin. According to the book, people with more melanin have innate physical, emotional, and spiritual inclinations that less melanated beings cannot attain, as easily.
What is Melanin?
Melanin is “the dark matter present in every being in the universe, existing on even a cellular level. It’s the core unit of existence with the power to emit and absorb energy… The purest form of melanin is black because it absorbs all color” (Asikiwe).
Think of a black hole in space, to understand the power that melanin has. Melanin absorbs light, heat, electromagnetics, UV rays, and radiation like a black hole consumes everything that is near its vicinity, even light. Furthermore, NASA plans on studying a “melanized fungus” to understand the genetics that are necessary to survive in space (NASA).
Melanin is a great group of natural pigments that give color to the human body. Melanin is found in cells throughout the body, including the brain.
Three Prominent Types of Melanin
- Eumelanin: when large amounts are present it gives dark colors to eyes, skin, and hair (the lack thereof results in different hues- blonde hair, green eyes, etc.)
- Pheomelanin: controls the pinkish pigments on your lips, nipples, and other body parts
- Neuromelanin: controls the color of your neurons
Advantages
- Melanin acts as a built-in sunscreen- protecting the individual from melanoma and the harmful effects of sun rays
- Slows down aging effects
- “When the same melanin cells found in your brain are present throughout your body, the message of movement can be passed much more quickly. This explains one of the reasons that black people often excel in sports and dancing. It’s because the message to move can be passed more quickly through the body, giving a better response time and improved ability” (Asikiwe).
- Spiritual freedom after personal acceptance
