The great classical soprano Abiodun “Abi” Koya, known as the Lion Queen of Nigeria, has enriched America with her presence. She is a professionally trained classical singer, poet, actor, screenwriter, and humanitarian. Koya has performed for influential leaders including Nigerian kings, world ambassadors, and U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Her heartfelt renditions, vocal prowess, and stage presence have captivated audiences worldwide. Koya’s repertoire ranges from traditional Nigerian melodies to classical compositions, connecting with the audience on an emotional level and creating a memorable experience for all. Her vocal technique and performance style are rooted in Western classical music, featuring operatic elements and a formal structure.

In an interview with The Sun News, Koya mentioned classical composers and pop artists as her influences. She also works with angels for inspiration, stating that sometimes they provide her with songs ready-made. She incorporates African languages into her performances, blending Western and African musical traditions in the classical music genre.

Starting her music career at a young age, Koya has performed at iconic venues such as the White House, Madison Square Garden, and the Democratic National Convention. She is described as one of the world’s few female African singers trained in classical opera, while also being well-versed in jazz, oldies, Broadway, and gospel genres.

Through her non-profit, the Clef Foundation, Koya mentors at-risk children in Nigeria and the United States through her Music Literacy Program. She also visits female inmates in Nigeria, encouraging them through music, gifts, and motivational speeches, and raises funds to help female inmates start small businesses upon release.

In addition to her musical endeavors, Koya has become an author with the release of her new book of poetry titled “The Moods of a Goddess” on Amazon. She is hosting an “Enchanted Evening” summer concert series featuring curated classical music performances and will also hold signature concerts titled “Christmas Opera” in December.
