The power of God is vividly illustrated by the Mamie Leonard Shut-in Ministries as Evangelist Mamie Sconiers Leonard exposes thousands to freedom through prayer and fasting.
“The mission of the Shut-in Ministry is deliverance for the body of Christ of those that are in sin or whatever condition. This ministry seeks to solve problems, heal the body’s sickness and save souls,” declared Evangelist Leonard, who selected 2 Chronicles 7:14 as the organization’s main scripture.
Since founding the Shut-in Ministry in 1983, she has traveled the nation and Jamaica proclaiming liberty through prayer and fasting. For more than 20 years, she crossed ecumenical lines to share with Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Foursquare, Church of God, COGIC, Apostolic, Pentecostal churches and more.
Currently, the ministry is based at Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ, 6741 West Boulevard in Inglewood. Her son, Elder Mark Leonard, is the pastor and Evangelist Leonard serves as first lady emeritus.
She also founded the prayer meetings at Greater Deliverance held each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition, Evangelist Leonard conducts monthly three-day Shut-in Revivals. The next one starts on Thursday, September 12 and continues to Saturday, September 14.
The guest preachers include Elder Jermaine Martin of Denver, CO, on September 13 at 7 p.m., and Evangelist Verda Lovelace of Milwaukee, WI, on September 14 at 8 a.m.
“For each shut-in, we begin our fast on Wednesday at midnight, move into the church on Thursday at 9 p.m. and remain there until Saturday noon. Prayer hours are at 12 a.m., 3 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., and 12 p.m.,” she explained.
“On Friday after each hour of prayer, a minister gives a 10-15 minute inspirational sermonette. On Friday evening, we have a one-night revival and deliverance service and on Saturday morning at 6 a.m., we have a special time of deliverance as well as march our walls down in victory during the Jericho March,” she added.
During her years of ministry, Evangelist Leonard has repeatedly witnessed the transforming power of God in the lives of people.
“A woman came with a brain tumor and God healed her of [it]. Another girl was about to have an abortion. Her mother talked her into coming to the ministry for prayer and today, that baby is five years old.
“There was another lady on her way to commit suicide. She came by the church and the Lord delivered her,” she recalled.
The success of the ministry led Evangelist Leonard to write the book, ‘Shut In and Win,’ to instruct congregations in establishing a similar outreach.
“The book is a guideline that tells you how to have a Shut-In Ministry in the home, with friends, or in the church. It tells about the purpose, prayer, fasting, seeking the face of God, and how to spend quality time with the Lord,” she said.
Now entering the 31st year of her prayer and fasting ministry, Evangelist Leonard remains inspired by Isaiah 58:6 – ‘Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?’
