On Nov. 11, Lint Studios in Los Angeles became the epicenter of artistic innovation and community healing during Passion + Progress, an immersive event led by acclaimed storyteller Larry Powell.
The Powell House Arts production drew around 200 attendees from LA’s creative and South LA communities. The evening celebrated Powell’s transformative storytelling through the debut of “The Daddy Issue,” the first piece in his ambitious PASSION project.
The event was more than a screening — it was a space designed for connection, reflection, and the celebration of Black, queer narratives.
Powell’s vision for PASSION is rooted in creating new ways for audiences to experience theater and storytelling.

“For me, I say allow them to come and bear witness to the recording, let that be the live experience,” he explained.
His approach involves distributing the recordings in various formats, such as audio plays and live albums, complete with sound design to create an engaging auditory experience. From there, the material can transform into a visual album, blending elements of theater and film.
These “passion plays,” as Powell calls them, blend themes of grief and love while inviting the community to share in the project’s evolution. The name Passion + Progress reflects this dual purpose: showcasing the art while fostering collective growth and connection.
Larry Powell thoughtfully curated Passion + Progress to foster a sense of community and well-being. Attendees were invited to explore the Prayer Closet, a wellness area staffed by mental health providers, offering support and moments of quiet reflection.
Another unique feature was the Intention Garden where guests planted seeds of intention into the soil, symbolizing hope and new beginnings.
“It was important for me to provide spaces where people could deal with whatever emotions were coming up for them,” Powell explained.
Live performances from Black, queer, trans, and women artists infused the evening with a soulful, uplifting energy.
“We had live music so people could get a taste, open up their hearts, and get into the vibe,” Powell shared, emphasizing the importance of creating a welcoming space.
As someone who also uses they/them pronouns and uplifts diverse identities, Powell’s commitment to inclusivity extended to making the event free for all.
“It was important for me that it be free,” they emphasized.
“People left there feeling like they had been changed for the better… [they] felt held, especially in light of the events of the week.”
Passion + Progress was more than just a debut of “The Daddy Issue;” it was a heartfelt gathering that brought people together to celebrate storytelling, community, and healing. By blending art with spaces for reflection and connection, Powell created an event where everyone could feel uplifted and inspired.
As Larry continues to develop PASSION, his commitment to sharing Black, queer narratives is a reminder of the power of art to bring people together and spark meaningful change.
