The Los Angeles City Council approved a motion on Sept. 21, to reaffirm and extend the $50,000 reward offer that leads to the apprehension and conviction of those responsible for the death of Mikeona Johnson. This motion was introduced by Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson and seconded by Councilmember Monica Rodriguez.

Mikeona Johnson went missing on September 9, 2020, near 92nd Street between Western Avenue and Manhattan Place. A week after she went missing, her body was found inside her vehicle, a 2003 silver Mercedes, near Manhattan Place Elementary School in South Los Angeles. Mikeona Johnson was a mother of two young children. The public is encouraged to share any information they might have with investigators.

The motion approved by the City Council also calls on the City Clerk to publish the reward notice in local media outlets to ensure that the public knows about the reward.

Mikeona Johnson’s reward also follows another recent motion requesting an Equity Analysis on the status of the investigation of crimes and violence against Black women and girls in Los Angeles. Harris-Dawson and Councilmember Curren Price introduced this motion following the death of Tioni Theus in South Los Angeles. Theus’ case received limited media coverage compared to the case of a missing White woman, which gained nationwide coverage.

The equity analysis tasks the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department and LAPD to report on the status of cases involving Black women and girls who are the victims of homicides or violent crimes.
