The Hampton University Brass Ensemble performed at the White House Black History Month Reception hosted by The President and First Lady, Feb. 18.

“This month is a chance to celebrate the central role that African Americans have played in every aspect of American life,” said President Barack Obama at the reception. “Marching for freedom and equality; jobs and justice; making a profound contribution to our culture and here at the White House we are committed to honoring that legacy.”

Conducted by Assistant Director of Bands Clifford Cox, the nine HU students performed in front of a crowd of nearly 500 invited guests in the White House. The members of the ensemble are Kevin Reed, senior, trumpet; Malachi Carter, freshman, trumpet; Guy Riddick, freshman, french horn; Bruce Burton, junior, tuba; Lauryn Moore, freshman, french horn; Edgar Rawles III, graduate student, trombone; Christopher Winters, sophomore, trombone; Brandon Moore, freshman, trumpet and Mark Clarke, sophomore, tuba.

“The ensemble’s performance was excellent and well received, thanks to the efforts of Mr. Cox and the student performers,” Dr. Shelia Maye, chair of the Department of Music. “The highlight of the day for the Hampton students was a photo with both The President and First Lady. The group had the chance to meet and talk with the President and Mrs. Obama.”
