Continuing its mission to empower youth, the Hawthorne Parks and Recreation Foundation announces the continuation of its Summer Swim Lesson Scholarships. These scholarships provide vital water safety skills to children within the community, ensuring they have the opportunity to learn and enjoy swimming in a safe environment.

Each year, swim lesson scholarships are awarded to 100 community members ages 4 to 15. Interested community members can apply for 2024 summer scholarships by visiting the Community Services office at 3901 West El Segundo Blvd., Hawthorne, CA 90250.

“The Parks and Recreation Foundation has made a positive mark in Hawthorne for the past four decades,” said City Manager Vontray Norris. “The funds that they have raised have impacted countless community members, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon!”

In mid-March, the Parks and Recreation Foundation hosts an annual Golf Tournament to raise funds for Summer Swim Lesson Scholarships. The Tournament also benefits other community projects; this year, it helped sponsor the City’s new digital marquee which will be installed in Memorial Park.

The Foundation also raises funds through its Beach Boys Landmark Brick Program. The Beach Boys Historic Landmark, located near the boyhood home of the Wilson Brothers, is one of Hawthorne’s most popular tourist attractions. Community members can commemorate their love for the Beach Boys and support the Parks and Recreation Foundation by purchasing an inscribed brick for $150.

Many former swim school participants have become pool aides, eventually becoming lifeguards at Hawthorne’s local pools. The Hawthorne junior lifeguard program was created with the explicit goal of increasing participants’ water confidence and preparing the next generation of local lifeguards.

The Foundation hopes to expand its local impact and will also be launching a new youth sports scholarship program for the 2024-2025 season. More information about the scholarship program will be released in the coming months.
