Faith and community leaders will co-sponsor “We Appreciate and Celebrate – Rev. Gilbert “Gil” Fears.” The salute is set for Friday, May 4, at 7 p.m., at Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church, 5300 South Denker Ave., in Los Angeles. The Rev. DeNon A. Porter is the host pastor.
Fears hosts “Edna Tatum’s Gospel Classics,” that airs on Sundays, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., on KPFK 90.7 FM.
“Rev. Gil, as he is affectionately known, filled-in immediately for Edna Tatum when she suddenly became ill in 2013. Since her death in 2014, he has given outstanding service to all of Southern California through the broadcast; that benefits thousands with classic gospel music, inspiration from God’s Word and intercessory prayer,” said Quaford Coleman, event chair.
“His unique ministry reaches across ethnic barriers to an extensive list of pastors, civic and denominational leaders, churches and religious organizations,” Coleman said.
“Many in the community would find it most difficult to imagine if Rev. Gil were not on the air every Sunday morning with ‘Edna Tatum’s Gospel Classics.’ Reverend Gil is truly in a class all of his own.”
The salute will feature the Greater Ebenezer Baptist Church Choirs, the Los Angeles Chapter – GMWA, the Los Angeles Contemporary Adults, Kenneth Glover, Henry Jackson, Lady Rose Neal, Maran Elizabeth Pittman and many more gospel singers and choirs.
Also, the celebration will highlight Fears’ 25+-years commitment to ministry with tributes and remarks from pastors, civic and denominational leaders, peers, family and friends. The free event is free and sponsored in part by the House of Winston Funeral Services, Inc., where the Rev. Shane B. Scott serves as president.
