Dr. June H. Brown was the only child born to the union of James Lee and Jessie Cooper Brown on November 5, 1927 in Los Angeles, California.

June attended the local public schools, graduating from Manual Arts High School in 1944. Upon graduation she enrolled at UCLA earning an A.B. degree in Spanish in 1948. While at UCLA she pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Sorority where she met and maintained many close friendships that endured to death.

June began her professional career with the LA County Department of Charities. She later returned to school, earning a Master of Social Work degree in 1961 and a doctorate in social work in 1970 from the University of Southern California. June continued her professional career at USC, becoming a tenured professor in the School of Social Work. She served as assistant dean of the school from 1987-1990, retiring in 1992.

June lived her life to the fullest. She was well traveled, and quite an historian on Los Angeles and the evolution of the black community in the 20th century. She was knowledgeable, deliberate with her words, and had an easy way about her that welcomed humor and lightheartedness in any social situation. She appreciated family and friends above all else.

A memorial service will be held at Holman United Methodist Church 3320 West Adams Blvd., Los Angeles on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM.
