L.A. Unified School District has officially approved the Athletic Field Modernization Project for Dorsey High School in South Los Angeles.
This construction project will provide Dorsey with its own football stadium for the first time in the 85 year history of the school. The stadium will be located on the west end of the school campus and it will replace the current football practice field.
The stadium complex will include seating accommodations for 1,500 spectators on the home side, and 500 spectators on the visitor side. There will be field lighting, a press box, restrooms and a scoreboard.
Willard Love, chair of the Stadium Project Committee, said, “I am overjoyed with the Board’s decision to green light this project. This will be the most impactful construction project in the history of Dorsey High School.” Love is also a Dorsey alumni, retired Administrator, and current School and Community Liaison on the committee.
Orlando Johnson, Dorsey High School principal who is also a Dorsey Alumni, stated, “Dorsey High School receiving a football stadium will significantly enhance our already amazing campus. This is something that our families and community deserve based on Dorsey’s history of academic and athletic excellence.”
Dorsey High School was opened in 1937 and just recently celebrated its 85th Anniversary. Dorsey has a well established reputation for having an outstanding academic and athletic program. In 2018, Dorsey was recognized as one of the top ten high schools in the entire country in terms of the number of alumni who have been drafted into the NFL.
The groundbreaking for the stadium is scheduled to begin in early 2025 and the projected completion date is the late summer of 2026. The Dorsey High School Alumni Association is excited that the project will be completed in time for the 90th Anniversary celebration in 2027.
In addition, to the Board approved construction items, there are some additional features that the Stadium Project Committee will be organizing and fundraising to add to this monumental project. More information will be forthcoming.
