Compton College’s annual Transfer Fair and College Night encourages students of all ages to plan for the next step in their educational journey by introducing them to a variety of colleges and universities. Representatives from more than 30 private and public colleges and universities will be at Compton College in the Tartar Quad on October 4 to share information about their respective programs with students. The free event is open to the public and offers attendees a great opportunity to network and learn about what the different colleges and universities offer students.

This year’s event will kick off with the Transfer Fair from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Compton College students are encouraged to walk from table to table gathering information and meeting with college/university representatives, making it a one-stop-shop for students looking to transfer.

From 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Transfer Center (D-27), there will be a presentation about the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Transfer Guarantee program. In 2015, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office established the guaranteed transfer agreement with the HBCUs. The agreement makes it easier for students to transfer from a California Community College to one of 37 participating HBCUs.

In addition to guaranteed admission, the HBCU Transfer Guarantee program offers priority registration, priority consideration for housing, consideration for transfer scholarships for students with a 3.2 or higher GPA, and preadmission advising. Students must complete the general education requirements for the University of California system or the California State University system and earn an associate degree (60 units) with a 2.5 or higher Grade Point Average (GPA) to be eligible for guaranteed admission with junior status to participating HBCUs. Students may also transfer with 30 or more California State or University of California transferable units and a 2.5 or higher GPA.

While HBCUs were originally established to primarily serve the higher education needs of the black community, they are open to all students who wish to apply. According to a study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, the proportion of Latino enrollment at HBCUs has increased in the last 30 years, especially in regions of the country where the Latino population is growing rapidly.

For High School Students and Parents
College Night will take place from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Compton College invites local high school students, as well as their parents, to campus to visit with the participating colleges and universities. This event is a collaborative effort to support high school students in their choice to pursue success in higher education and increase local college enrollment rates.

It’s never too early for high school seniors to begin thinking about college enrollment. Compton College staff will be on hand to discuss and answer questions about the application and registration process for summer and fall 2019.

Participants will include representatives from University of California and California State University campuses, as well as member institutions from the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU).
