McKenna Opens Campaign Office in Leimert Park

The recent storm couldn’t keep parents, students, educators, and voters away from helping to celebrate the grand opening of Dr. George McKenna’s Leimert Park campaign headquarters on March 2.  Among those in attendance were Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters, South Los Angeles Councilmember Bernard Parks, retired L.A. Councilmember Jan Perry, and former Assemblymember Mike Davis.  Beginning this week, McKenna, whose turnaround of South Los Angeles’ Washington Prep High School led to an award-winning movie starring Denzel Washington, will kick off his field campaign operations in hopes of being elected to complete the late Marguerite LaMotte’s term on the Los Angeles Unified School District board representing District 1.  McKenna’s campaign headquarters is located at 4715 South Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

LAUSD Board District 1 spans from Windsor Hills to the southwest, Cheviot Hills to the northwest, Hancock Park to the north, University Park to the northeast and parts of Gardena to the southeast and has been represented by an African-American since districts were first established in 1979.  At 41 percent, it is the only LAUSD district with a plurality of African-American voters.  The special election will be held during the June 3, 2014 state primary ballot, with a runoff if no candidate reaches 50% +1 vote scheduled for August 12, 2014.
