Self-taught baker Nicole Green went from selling cupcakes on the corner of her family’s home to owning her own bakery in a matter of years.
What started as a hobby for this Marriot event coordinator, turned into a sweet passion, but she hasn’t quit her day job just yet.
Prior to baking, Coco saw herself as a dancer or an athlete.
“I have been baking for a long time but I always did it as a hobby. I started taking it serious when my family and friends were always requesting me to bake cakes and cupcakes,” said Green.
Now she is a first time vendor at the 11th annual Taste of Soul and couldn’t be more excited to introduce her baked goods to the Taste of Soul nation.
“I am definitely looking forward to networking,” said Green. “It is always great to make a profit because you put so much money and so much effort into the event. But, I have learned that it is so much more about networking and who you can connect with at these events.”
This year’s Taste of Soul menu items include, Pound cake, Red velvet, Carrot cake, and her fan favorites Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Snickers cupcakes.
Coco officially started her business in December of 2013. Since then, she has created desserts for birthday parties, baby showers, corporate events, school fundraisers, and for celebrity events like TVOne reality series, “Hollywood Divas”.
From the classic red velvet cake to the unique flavor combinations like snickers and cinnamon toast crunch, the home baker is taking flavor combination to new heights. While following her motto, “Custom cakes and cupcakes for any occasion.”
What makes her desserts different from the rest?
“I know exactly what you want when you want a cupcake and each one of my cupcakes has a twist to it,” said Green. “Everything is from scratch from the cake to the frosting. Every cupcake that I have is moist, not one of them is dry. Some people’s frosting is way too sweet and some people’s frosting taste like it is from the store. My frosting is from scratch and it is just right.”
Although Coco usually bakes and manages events by herself, this year she has brought along some of her friends and family to tackle the sea of customers.
What’s next for the rising baker?
“I really want to have a mobile truck,” said Green. “I want to have the cupcakes already prepped so that I can set up in different cities and hit different types of people. Then, I want to have an actually bakery.”
