Chan Gaines, better known as Big Chan from Snoop Dogg’s music group, Doggy’s Angels, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Fully immersed in the busy city lifestyle, Big Chan mastered multiple skill sets that would eventually lead her to become the go-to designer for A-list celebrities, such as Beyonce, Prince, and the Platinum certified music girl group, City Girls.
Big Chan owes her ingenuity and perseverance to watching her mother, Loyce, be a community treasure. The neighbors around her knew Loyce as “Control.” Big Chan stated that her mother was there for everybody and was extremely popular for her hairstyling ability.
Big Chan continued, “If you came to our house, you have a confidant, therapist, and you had a cook if you were hungry. You would have a good night’s stay if you were homeless and had nowhere to go. She was like everybody’s mom.”
“Control” was a well-known hairstylist in South Los Angeles. She ran her business for at least 20 years. “Control” used to braid the hair of iconic pop star, Donna Summer.
Reflecting on the passions that her mother shared, Big Chan said, “She loved fashion and she loved music, and that’s where I got a lot of who I am from.”
“Control” succumbed to cancer in 2014. Her last words to her daughter fell along the lines of “keep my legacy alive.”
Because of Big Chan’s mother, people who were hungry had a meal to eat, those who needed shelter had a place to stay, and anyone who need a shoulder to cry on—had a place to feel comforted.
In her honor, Big Chan has started an active lifestyle brand called Loyce Lane, under her fashion atelier, House of Cyndarella. Her creative studio caters to those with a vision in their style of dress. Big Chan looks to make that a reality.
The former Doggy’s Angel specializes in costume design and prom dresses, but she is not limited to one particular type of fashion. Big Chan shared that she could do it all for anyone looking for a custom-made fit.
Big Chan is gifted musically. She has been on tour with Snoop Dogg and signed to a girl group that he oversees. Most recently, she was the opening show for City Girls as well as the lead designer for their performance gear.
