Loreanzo Malray passed away relatively peacefully at his home in Ladera Heights, Los Angeles, California. He was nearly 99 years old when he passed on January 29. His ceremony was held at Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary on Friday March 8.
Loreanzo was honored as a World War Il hero and served with distinction in the U.S. Military. Before even receiving his high school diploma, Malray’s fond sense of duty led him to volunteer for the United States Army Air Force, however his aspirations did not find satisfaction in performing custodial tasks, as he sought to be amid the conspicuous valor of ground battles with an unyielding determination to serve his country in a capacity that aligned with his strengths and ambitions.
Malray transferred to the Regular Army Infantry, and it was here amidst the camaraderie of fellow soldiers that Loreanzo cultivated his skills to become an adept marksman, an acknowledgement of his expert precision and unwavering focus. Stationed across the challenging terrains of North Africa and Italy, Malray’s dedication never once faltered.
His service within the renowned Buffalo Soldiers, the 92nd Infantry Division, a unit distinguished by its extraordinary contributions and the valorous spirit of African American soldiers, signify the historic chapter in his military career and in the broader narrative of the Second World War. As the sun rose on the poignant September morning in 1945, in Livorno Italy, Private First Class Loreanzo Malray received his Honorable Discharge, having served his country from 1943 to 1945 with great distinction.
It is with heartfelt gratitude and consistent with the commitment to our Veterans welfare that the Veterans Administration has accepted Loreanzo Malray with a full medical retirement. This recognition is not merely a reflection of bygone heroics, but is it a testament to Malray’s unwavering valor, and serves as an embodiment of the indomitable spirit that defined a generation.
His legacy interwoven with the historical significance of the Buffalo soldiers remains an intrinsic part of the fabric that upholds our nation’s freedom and sovereignty.
