Councilwoman Heather Hutt (CD 10), in collaboration with HBCU Curate, will sponsor the second annual HBCU Culture Fest on Friday, September 15, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex, 5001 Obama Blvd., in Los Angeles.
This vibrant and culturally empowering event will celebrate the outstanding legacy and culture of historically Black colleges and universities, and will be a precursor to the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) v. UCLA football game taking place on Saturday, September 16. Various historically Black universities and colleges from across the country, along with several members of the National Panhellenic Council (CPHC), will be present.
The event includes a pep rally featuring a performance by the famous NCCU Sound Machine Marching Band. Also, North Carolina Central University will be honored for the insitution’s academic excellence. Food, music, and games for the community to enjoy.
In addition, Kim Coles, who attended North Carolina Central University, will participate in the HBCU Curate. A well-known actress, comedian, and game show host, Coles is best for her role as Sinclair James-Jones in the sitcom “Living Single.”
“Our HBCU Culture Fest is a celebration of heritage and empowerment,” said Hutt. “There is no question of the invaluable role they play in shaping the minds of countless individuals. There are no HBCUs in the City, and this is why I am excited to give our children the opportunity to learn and experience the excellence that these institutions have to offer. I am grateful to HBCU Curate for their partnership in bringing this amazing opportunity to the Tenth District.”
Founders of HBCU Curate, Mimi Sanders and Lee Vanda, said, “Proudly partnering with the City of Los Angeles CD10, HBCU Culture Fest is dedicated to illuminating the brilliance of HBCUs within our community. We stand as a bridge to the next generation of learners, curating vibrant events that celebrate the tradition, heritage, and the boundless possibilities that HBCUs offer.”
This event is open to the public, and admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure a prime spot to witness the magic of the NCCU Sound Machine Marching Band.
