SACRAMENTO – The California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) today praised the United States Treasury Department for its announcement that Harriet Tubman, an African American abolitionist and humanitarian, will appear on a new version of the twenty dollar bill.

“Harriet Tubman is a national shero and a reflection of the millions of women and minorities that have fought and continue to fight for a more just and equal nation,” said Senator Isadore Hall, III (D – South Bay), Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus. “African Americans have been and continue to be a fundamental part of our nation’s history. While African Americans have contributed greatly to the success of the United States through their work in science, engineering, business development, government leadership and the arts, none of these achievements would have been possible if it were not for American heroes and sheroes that fought to end slavery and build a nation founded on the values of equality and justice.”

“I know of few people more worthy than Harriet Tubman to appear on our nation’s currency. On behalf of the California Legislative Black Caucus, we thank the US Treasury Department and President Barack Obama for their efforts to recognize one of our nation’s most famous and influential daughters, Harriet Tubman.”

The new currency designs will go into circulation in 2020, the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote.
