Thousands of people are expected to attend the Mid-Year Convocation convened by Bishop T. Larry Kirkland and Episcopal Supervisor Mary L. Kirkland, spiritual leaders of the Fifth Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church.
The meeting, set for Wednesday, March 11, through Friday, March 13, takes place at the LAX Hilton Hotel, 5711 West Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Pastor Kelvin T. Calloway and the members of Bethel A.M.E. Church – L.A. will host the event.
“This year’s convocation will be another exciting and empowering gathering for the entire ecumenical faith community. With plenaries, workshops and worship, it is the goal of the convocation to challenge the attendees to ‘Rebuild the Walls’ of their churches, communities, and their cities through the biblical mandate of evangelism,” said Bishop Kirkland.
“Faith is still a foundational value for the 21st Century. The church must find new, refreshing and innovative ways to communicate the message of Jesus Christ to this technologically savvy generation. While this generation has everything to live with, they are often lacking something to live for. Faith in Jesus Christ gives us something to live for.”
The agenda features several powerful presenters and preachers. On March 11, at 10 a.m., Pastor Jarvis Collier of Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Kansas City, KS, will lead the opening plenary session exploring evangelism for this generation. Pastor J. Edgar Boyd of First A.M.E. Church –L.A. will preach at the noon worship service, and the legendary Brookinaires will provide the music.
Bishop Samuel L. Greene, presiding prelate of the 12th Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church, will bring the message on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Fifth District Choir, directed by Bro. Ron Lowe, will provide the music.
Activities on Thursday, March 12, include preaching by the Rev. Collier at 12 p.m., the Evening of Elegance Scholarship Gala at 4:30 p.m., and preaching by Pastor Ticey Brown of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Also, the choirs of Bethel A.M.E. and Mount Tabor will render the music.
The convocation concludes with the closing worship service on Friday, March 13, at 12 p.m. The Rev. Donna Roberson, presiding elder of the A.M.E. Midwest Conference, will preach.
