Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has been named to the AFC roster for the 2017 Pro Bowl, the Chargers and the NFL announced Tuesday.
Originally selected as a second-alternate, Rivers will replace Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, who is unable to participate due to injury.
Rivers threw for 4,386 yards in 2016, fifth in the League. It also was the fifth-highest single-season total of his career and seventh-highest in franchise history. Rivers threw 33 touchdown passes this past season to rank fourth in the NFL. The 33 TDs marked the second-highest season total of his career and tied Dan Fouts (1981) for the second-highest season mark in franchise annals.
Rivers is a four-time Pro Bowl performer. He previously played in the 2011-12 and 2014 Pro Bowls. He joins cornerback Casey Hayward and running back Melvin Gordon in representing the Chargers. Both Hayward and Gordon are participating in the Pro Bowl for the first time in their careers.
