Two-time Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway wants to take us on a musical train ride. Hathaway released her seventh studio album, “Lalah Hathaway Live” and she could not be more excited. “I grew up listening to live albums and I wanted to create something for this generation of fans, to create a moment,” Hathaway said. “Music is like a wonderful train ride…you can loose yourself in the music, in your thoughts and that’s what I hope listeners will do with this album.”
It’s hard to believe that Hathaway has been in the business for 25 years but she has. “I can’t remember a time when I did not love music or have it in my life,” Hathaway said. “I guess it’s in the genes.” Hathaway, the daughter of legendary singer Donny Hathaway, delivers a powerful, musical punch with her latest 14-tracks release.
Recorded live from two sold-out shows at the historic Troubadour Theater in Los Angeles, (where the audience happily sang along), Hathaway lends her distinctive, soulful vocals to Angel (Anita Baker’s hit) and her fathers’ classic hit, Ghetto Boy. “I first sang Angel at a tribute for Anita Baker which was such an honor for me,” said Hathaway. “Now I get requests to sing that song at my concerts and I love that”. Hathaway hopes that Live “bridges a gap between what is old and what is new. By old, I mean historic, legendary and legacy music. I am bridging those genres to what’s going on now”.
Little Ghetto Boy “is of course my father’s song so it’s truly special to me”, Hathaway said. “It’s a song that speaks to all of us especially in light of recent events that played out all over the country. It talks about what’s happening in the streets but it also offers hope and that’s important.” This album is chock full of goodies from the sultry Forever, For Always, For Love, to the smooth You Were Meant for Me, and the soulful Lean on Me featuring Robert Glasper. Hathaway does not disappoint and this album shows that she has a true love for performing.
In fact, Lalah Hathaway Live was recorded in the same theater where her father recorded Donny Hathaway Live in 1972. “Performing is what I do, I’m always performing somewhere,” said Hathaway. “ “This album is a dream fulfilled! It means everything to me to have built this record with and for the fans, as I mark my 25th year as a recording artist. I cannot wait to take this show on the road!”
