As re-districting has re-drawn her district, Bass is now gearing up to run for the new 37th Congressional district
Rep. Karen Bass has just kicked off her re-election campaign. Now in the 33rd district, she is gearing up to run for re-election in the 37th district–the result of re-districting. A former assembly speaker and veteran at campaigning, Bass is seeking hundreds of community members to get involved in her re-election campaign.
“We’d love for as many people as possible to walk neighborhoods with us after the program,” she said at a kick-off rally, “so please make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
Bass is running for her second term in Congress. She keeps in touch with her district in the community often through conference calls when her physical presence is not possible. She holds periodic round-table sessions for the media and when she announced her re-election, she issued the following: members of the media are invited to join this call (a telephonic conference call).
Her fist term was hectic and at the end of 2011, and immediately thereafter, she began a signature-gathering effort. Scores of workers for Bass were canvassing the Kingdom Day Parade, soliciting signatures to buttress her re-election bid, while getting involved.
As expected during the telephone town hall meeting, Bass discussed her passions, policy positions and vision for the district in 2012, and beyond. She also used the occasion to recruit volunteers to help take back the House of Representatives–from the GOP and the Tea Party–and to re-elect President Obama to a second term.
Political pundits and veteran election watchers have stated that one term in Congress hardly gets a representative properly settled in, because usually nothing much changes in one term. With that in mind, Bass faces the same issues in her second term as she did in the first.
Back then she said, “Our goal is to bring banks and homeowners to the negotiating table to find alternatives to the home foreclosures that have crippled our community,” after she was endorsed by Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Bass also said that in Washington she’ll be “striving every day to both raise my voice for the people of this district and also to try and lower some of the rhetoric that is dividing this country.”
She is hoping that a second term will move her along further on that path.
