More than 2,000 families received free food and essential supplies during the Community Food Distribution held on Feb. 22 at the Los Angeles Sentinel.

The L.A. County Federation of Labor partnered with Labor Community Services, L.A. Councilwoman Heather Hutt, Brotherhood Crusade, Mothers In Action, and It’s Bigger Than Us to hold the drive-through event to assist people in need and those impacted by the recent wildfires.

According to LA County Fed President Yvonne Wheeler, “Our unwavering commitment to serving those in need ensures that families receive the resources they deserve during this challenging time.”

Citing the items distributed, Hutt said, “We gave away fruits and vegetables, and even had chicken and fish. This is super important in our community and through this collective effort, we were able to organize this event to have food for our community.”

Brotherhood Crusade President/CEO Charisse Bremond Weaver stressed the importance of the distribution in light of “food insecurities” in South L.A. and the greater metropolitan area.

“This is a small way that we are sharing how much we care about our community in South Los Angeles,” noted Bremond Weaver.

“Brotherhood Crusade has a 57-year history of serving the needs of our community. Today is one of those projects where we are conscious of the community’s needs and serve with love, care and dignity from the Brotherhood Crusade to our community.”

Commending the results of the collaborative giveaway, Bakewell Media President and Sentinel Executive Editor Danny J. Bakewell Jr. noted, “We unite our efforts because it’s a tough time for folks and we never want to forget those who are less fortunate and in need.  We want to continue to serve our community and benefit the people and the residents of the city of Los Angeles whenever we can.”

Mothers In Action President Tracy Mitchell and her cadre of volunteers were on-site as well distributing hundreds of food bags to residents who walked to the event.
