The Los Angeles High School Romans earned their first home victory with their 22-0 win over the Hawkins Hawks. This matchup marked the first home game for the Romans since October 2021.
The Romans suffered two losses to Panorama and Taft. L.A. High quarterback Brian Elvira noted how the lessons learned from those prior games paid off.
“Those two first losses against Panorama and Taft, two D1 schools, we shouldn’t even be on the field with them and yet we competed our best,” Elvira said. “We managed to maintain a score with both D1 schools even though we took a loss against both of them.”
Shawn Pringle, Jeshua Alcantara, Christopher Guevara, and Aren Barajas were voted L.A. High Players of the Game.

The Romans found success by depending on their running game with Pringle making 175 rushing yards and one touchdown and Alcantara running for 101 yards. Junior Semaj Williams gave credit to the offensive line for their success on the ground.
“With the line blocking very, very efficiently and moving the guys out of the way,” Williams said. “Making an open hole for us to get the ball moving.”
The Roman offense converted three fourth downs, the defense registered six quarterback hits.
Hawks senior Amahgee Kegler made an 18-yard rush soon after L.A. made their first touchdown. Penalties, along with the Romans’ stifling defense, would keep the Hawks’ offense stagnant. Senior Amahgee Kegler worked to keep his teammates competitive.
“We came in with the intensity that we wanted to win, we didn’t get the win,” Kegler said. “I tried keeping their composure but when things are not going right, you got to make something happen … I found some creases but unfortunately due to certain flags and holding, it was called back.”
Hawkins now has a 1-2 overall record; they defeated the Diego Rivera Huskies 42-22 and fell to the Cabrillo Jaguars 36-8. They will travel to clash against the Manual Arts Toilers on September 8 at 3:00P.M..
The Hawks will host the Westchester Comets on September 8 at 3:00P.M.
