The Lula Washington Dance Theatre will present its Second Annual August Quarterly, Urban Gospel Celebration – Faith & Resilience, on Sunday, August 14, at 2 p.m., at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre Outdoor Performance Space, 3773 Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles.
The celebration will feature gospel music, dance and spoken word by members of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre and guest artists. Proceeds from the “fund and friend-raiser” will help the organization sustain its on-going programs.
“The August Quarterly creates space for healing and acknowledgment of community and world trauma while we hope to ignite the spirit, build strength and fortify resilience for the future in the celebration of life, freedom, faith and resilience,” said Erwin Washington, executive director.
“With this in mind we ask that our audiences plan to wear all white to symbolize peace, unity and healing,” she said and added that tickets or donations can be made at https://lwdtaugustquarterly.bpt.me
The August Quarterly was started 1814 by Peter Spencer, in Wilmington, Delaware and became comparable to an Independence Day for Black people on the Delmarva Peninsula. In the early years of the festival, abolitionists and Underground Railroad conductors such as Thomas Garrett and Harriet Tubman were active participants.
The August Quarterly has remained a time of reunion, religious revival and celebration of freedom for the people in and around Wilmington, Delaware. It is said that the festival celebrated freedom of religion, freedom to gather and freedom of speech.
“The LWDT professional company is delighted to share the stage with Dr. Anthony McFarland, of Abundant Harvest LIFT Church as our guest emcee and the glorious voice of Tameca DeVant, along with and other invited guests,” said Tamica Washington-Miller, associate director.
“Faith and resilience is what kept the Lula Washington Dance Theatre going for 42 years. We know it will keep us moving towards the future.”
