Award-winning black-owned restaurants, culinary showcases and chefs will light up SoCal beginning August 11
Black Restaurant Week LLC(BRW), the nation’s largest celebration of black-owned food businesses, will entice thousands of LA foodies with a showcase of the city’s top black culinary talent from August 11-18. The week will exhibit a variety of black culinary businesses and professionals, all while calling attention to minority inequality in the food and beverage industry.
During its weeklong takeover in LA, BRW will partner with local, black-owned restaurants across the city to offer exclusive prix fixe menus starting at $10. In addition to the restaurant offerings, BRW will host a lineup of events designed to expand awareness and increase support for LA’s community of black culinary professionals.
“It’s the communal table effect,” says Warren Luckett, co-founder of BRW in a recent Forbes feature. “We want to bring everyone together through the love of food. African-Americans make up only eight percent of restaurant owners and managers in the U.S. Our mission is to provide a platform that calls for inclusion in the industry and exposes and elevates black-owned businesses.”
Last year’s soft launch in LA showcased: Sky’s Gourmet Tacos, Grilled Fraiche, Who’s Hungry Caribbean & Catering, Harold & Belle’s Restaurant, Comfort LA and Red’s Flavor Table. The 2019 roster will feature over a dozen black-owned restaurants from the Greater Los Angeles area.
“The restaurant lineup we have in store for this year paints a vibrant picture of LA’s black culinary community,” Luckett said. “From spots in Baldwin Hills like Post and Beam to cafes and eateries in Inglewood and Downtown LA, we want to showcase that Hollywood isn’t the only place to get a taste of talent.”
In addition to the restaurant week, BRW will also host the following culinary experience:
● August 18, 2-5 P.M. | NOSH: Culinary Showcase | Vector90
BRW’s flagship event will feature endless delectable bites from a host of LA’s finest black-owned restaurants, catering businesses and food vendors.
The vibrant celebration ends on a high note, with a portion of BRW’s proceeds going back to the heartland of the black culinary community— the farmers that sustain the industry. The organization will make a donation to Family Agriculture Resource Management Services (F.A.R.M.S.) in support of its efforts to provide legal and technical services to farmers of color.
During its 2019 tour, Black Restaurant Week will visit: Houston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Atlanta, the Bay Area and Dallas. Black Restaurant Week Los Angeles is proudly supported by Vector90, ChefWear, Branwar Wine Distributing Co. and Fade Media.
