The Rev. Paul A. Hill is the new interim pastor of Holman United Methodist Church, the largest African American UMC congregation in Southern California. A retired elder in the UMC denomination, Hill brings significant expertise in the areas of pastoral care, church administration, creative ministries for children, youth and seniors, and innovative HIV/AIDS outreach.
Hill has served in senior-level capacities at many churches and universities in Texas, the east coast and Southern California, including seven years as associate pastor at Holman UMC. Most recently, he was the pastor at Grace UMC in Los Angeles. He also headed congregations at Bowen Memorial UMC, First UMC-Compton and St. Paul’s UMC in Tarzana.
Other assignments included as campus minister at North Texas State and Texas Women’s Universities, chaplain at Parkland Memorial and Methodist Central Hospitals in Dallas, Texas, and associate pastor at Hamilton Park UMC, his family church, in North Dallas. In addition, he served a cross-racial appointment at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, a predominately White congregation in Fort Worth, Texas.
A native of Dallas, Hill earned his Bachelor’s degree at North Texas State University and his Master of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology, a United Methodist institution. During the course of his graduate studies, he served a Presbyterian congregation in Brooklyn, New York and Methodist congregations in Boston and Woburn, Mass.
Across his years of active ministry, Hill has worked with a variety of civic, religious and educational institutions. Some of the organizations he served are the Los Angeles Council of Churches, Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, Board of Ordained Ministries of the California Pacific Annual Conference, National Council of Communities of Justice, Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry Board at UCLA, Ladera Heights Clergy Police Council, director of the Pastor’s License School at the Claremont School of Theology, Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School for primary school age children, and Strength for the Journey Camps/Programs, which offers counseling and educational programs to persons affected with HIV/AIDs.
