Part of the ‘blue wave” that hit Republicans in the 2018 mid-terms came from young women and one of those women came from Illinois. Lauren Underwood defeated Republican incumbent Randy Hultgren for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District.
Underwood is a longtime healthcare advocate. “As a registered nurse and lifelong health care advocate, Lauren Underwood has a tremendous record of service to her community and a deep understanding of the challenges they face,” House Majority PAC Executive Director Charlie Kelly said in a news release. “She’ll bring that needed perspective and experience to Congress.”
Underwood has said she would fight to keep the Affordable Care Act intact after having worked on it in her role as a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Underwood who is 32 years of age, is set to be sworn in on January 3. Before Underwood, Barbara Jordan of Texas was the youngest black woman elected to Congress at the age of 36 on January 3, 1973.
