WHAT | Bug Fair, which began 32 years ago at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) as a humble tribute to the crawly creatures that surround us, has become the biggest bug festival on the West Coast. This two-day festival—and NHMLA’s most popular weekend—features a variety of programming for all ages celebrating our winged, multi-legged, squirmy, and sometimes bug-eyed friends.
This year, Bug Fair is hosting fifty exhibitors. See everything from exotic insect collections to pet tarantulas, from millipedes to centipedes, from bug-related products, like honey and silk, to bug-inspired artwork and jewelry. Visit the main stage to watch Bug Chefs David George Gordon, Joseph Yoon, and Aly Moore whip up protein-filled snacks, and explore the Museum’s 3.5-acre Nature Gardens for the chance to go on bug hunts, get crafty, and experience up-close encounters with crawly creatures.

NHMLA | The Natural History Family of Museums includes NHMLA, the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum (Hancock Park/Mid-Wilshire), and the William S. Hart Museum (Newhall, California). The Family of Museums serves more than 1.2 million visitors annually, and it is a national leader in research, exhibitions, and education. NHMLA was the first dedicated museum building in Los Angeles, opening its doors in 1913, and has since amassed one of the world’s most extensive and valuable collections of natural and cultural history—more than 35 million objects. NHMLA is the only natural history museum in the world today that incorporates on- and offsite nature exploration, local wildlife inventories, a slate of community science programs, and active research into a museum paradigm that once focused on the past, but increasingly addresses the present and the future. |
