Prior to the founding of the Congressional Black Caucus being founded, was its predecessor, the Democratic Select Committee. The committee which was founded by in January 1969 by a group of Black members of the House of Representatives including:

The organization was renamed the Congressional Black Caucus in February 1971, founders include:
