Pastor Oliver E. Buie and the members of Bel-Vue Community Presbyterian Church will present “Shelter,” a one-woman play about homelessness, on Friday August 16, at 7:30 p.m., in the edifice located at 675 E. 118th Street in Los Angeles.
After seeing the Los Angeles City Council District 14 be “taken advantage of for so very long” and the aftermath of the George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery killings that made downtown LA feel like a “war zone,” Attorney Teresa Hillery asked herself who was in charge. Displeased with her findings from her research. Hillery said to herself, “We deserve better, and I can give them better.”
Last week, California Black Media hosted a reception honoring Department of Finance (DOF) Director Joe Stephenshaw. A number of state lawmakers, public officials, Black news publishers, journalists and others attended the event co-hosted by the California Black Freedom fund and held at the Prelude Kitchen & Bar in downtown Sacramento.

There is a need for all residents to come together. There is no room for lack of support when multiple livelihoods are looking at the bottom of their barrel. All public officials took a united front and supported the message of compassion to spread across Los Angeles.
A temporary-housing shelter providing 100 beds for homeless adults and 54 beds for youth opened today in the Venice area.
In the animal shelter scam, crooks will post pictures of the animals with false information about “high kill” shelters and imminent death unless they immediately receive money to rescue the pets.
City and county agencies need to do more to help the thousands of people in the Los Angeles area who lack shelter during this winter’s El Nino storms, the county’s civil grand jury concluded in a report released last week. The panel’s report says plans submitted last fall by the area’s largest cities, including Los Angeles, are “unconscionable and grossly inadequate” in sheltering those who are forced to live on the streets. The grand jury is “very concerned that the 2,772 shelter and surge capacity beds planned by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority is just a fraction of the number necessary to shelter homeless people in severe weather,” the report states.
In anticipation of severe weather due to El Niño, the city of Compton has announced the opening of their Winter Shelter Program. The program will operate through March 31, 2016 and provides meals, access to showers and transportation to and from shelter locations for participants.
