Ships Waiting To Enter Ports of L.A., L.B. in Record Backlog

The San Pedro Bay port complex, which consists of the two busiest container ports in the United States, is experiencing its
largest backlog of ships on record, with more than 58 vessels waiting to enter
the ports today.

The Port of Los Angeles said Tuesday morning that 28 ships were waiting to get into the Port of L.A. and 30 waiting to get into the Port of Long Beach. In the last few weeks, more than 70 ships were waiting to get into
the two ports.

County Supervisors Back Longshore Union in Port Fight

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted today to study the potential economic impact of automation on jobs at the Port of Los Angeles and back a union that opposes driverless cargo handlers.

Supervisor Janice Hahn proposed the study, saying the port was a source of “good, middle-class jobs” and raising concerns about robots replacing cargo handlers and other port workers.

“Do we really want a society full of robots?” she asked.
