FAME Hosts Live Recording Featuring Brookinaires Gospel Choir

The 70-member Brookinaires Gospel Choir (BGC) will record a live CD and video concert on Saturday, May 27, at 5 p.m., at the historic First AME Church (FAME), 2270 S. Harvard Blvd., in Los Angeles. Korean American and African American Leaders hold 4/29 Unity Event

Commemoration recognized 25th anniversary of 1992 L.A. Civil Unrest First AME Church of Los Angeles (FAME) and the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) co-sponsored a 4/29 Unity Event on April 29 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the city’s 1992 civil unrest. The program, held at FAME’s Allen House Gardens, featured unifying remarks from L.A.’s Black and Korean leaders that illustrated the vastly improved relationship between the African American and Korean American communities. First Ladies Health Day Marks Another Successful Event

Thirty churches in the Los Angeles area participated in the 6th Annual Walgreens-sponsored First Ladies Health Day on March 26. During the event, free health tests and medical screenings were provided for the entire family to address preventative illnesses, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics. Medical healthcare partners from Walgreens and more than 50 health organizations provided medical advice and counseling, as well as screenings for hypertension, HIV/AIDS, glucose, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer. Ruby Norman Marks 105th Birthday

FAME Church Prevails in Lawsuit Against Former Pastor

After a nearly four-year court battle, First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (FAME) has prevailed in a lawsuit against its former pastor, the Rev. John Hunter; his wife, Denise Hunter; and several others for inappropriately separating and removing the public benefit assets from the control of FAME church, without the knowledge of the congregation. Kirkland convenes 91st Annual Conference

More than 5,000 members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church will convene for the 91st Session of the Southern California Conference (SCC). The gathering takes place Sunday, October 19 through Sunday, October 25, at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, 5711 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Following the conference, the Fifth District Planning Meeting will be held on Monday, October 26 to Tuesday, October 27. The Right Reverend Theodore Larry Kirkland, presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, will lead both sessions. Pastor J. Edgar Boyd and the members of First AME Church of Los Angeles will serve as hosts.
