Black America Needs a ‘New Normal’: Equitable Credit Access to Build Wealth

Although many officials have called for a ‘return to normal’, millions of small businesses and communities need something new instead. In Black America especially, the ‘old normal’ never delivered equitable access to wealth-building opportunities as those that well-served served much of White America. Instead, a lengthy history of public policies designed to create and sustain a burgeoning middle class systemically excluded Blacks and other people of color.

The $2.3 trillion coronavirus stimulus package includes a temporary tax change for individuals who make at least $1 million a year, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. The Joint Committee’s analysis shows 43,000 taxpayers in the highest income bracket, making more than $1 million a year, could save a combined $70 billion in taxes. Almost all benefits from the tax break go to people making more than $100,000 a year.

Harris (D-CA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), both former state attorneys general, on Wednesday sent a letter to every Trump cabinet official calling on them to cooperate with all ongoing and future investigations related to the potential wrongdoing by the President of the United States, preserve all evidence relevant to their departments, and protect whistleblowers and the independence of inspectors general.

Harris, Menendez, Casey Reintroduce Legislation to Spotlight Federal Spending on Children

U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Bob Casey (D-PA) on Tuesday reintroduced the Focus on Children Act and the Children’s Budget Act, a package of bills aimed at increasing transparency about federal investment in the health and well-being of our children. The legislation, introduced during Children’s Week 2019, would require the Office of Management and Budget and the Congressional Budget Office to produce annual, public reports on proposed and actual federal spending on children’s programs.
