Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson’s Statement on the Death of George Floyd

“As a Black man who watched the George Floyd take his last breath while the 200 lb. weight of a police officer was leveraged on his neck for 8 minutes, I was overwhelmed with pain and anger. George repeatedly pleaded that he could not breathe as two other officers held him down in that fatal position. Another Minneapolis officer watched as his body succumbed to the attack and went limp. 

Rep. Bass: This is our moral moment

This is our moral moment – the Congressional Black Caucus will be introducing legislation to address laws that shield police officers from ever being accountable for excessive force. We will also address the structural conflict of interests of relying on DAs to charge officers from police departments they work with every day. Abusive law enforcement officers should lose the privilege of being an officer. 

Wendy’s Window-The International Women of Courage Celebration Comes to Los Angeles!

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first week of March as Women’s History Week.  Seven years later, Congress declared the entire month of March as Women’s History Month. I find it sadly ironic that we need legislative reminders to celebrate and remember the accomplishments of various people and communities.  However, I am grateful that the work of women is being celebrated nonetheless! Across the country, March 8thhas been designated as, “International Women’s Day” where people celebrate and honor women worldwide.

L.A. Charges 105 Cannabis Locations with Illegal Activity

Since January, all businesses conducting commercial cannabis activity in Los Angeles are required to be licensed by both the state of California and the city. The new regulations follow the passage in recent years of state laws allowing recreational cannabis use and cannabis sales in the State of California.
