L.A. Care Commits More Than $500,000 to Projects Reducing Health Disparities and Promoting Systemic Justice

L.A. Care Health Plan recently announced awards of up to $516,000 to projects that support the healthcare safety net, reduce health disparities, and empower social service organizations to address systemic racism and promote systemic justice, which means helping marginalized communities fight for racial, social and economic justice.

Unique, long-standing collaboration includes focus on local health issues, identifying health disparities, and delivering customized programming based upon the needs of the community L.A. Care Health Plan and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan held a grand opening ceremony on April 26, for their Community Resource Center (CRC) in West Los Angeles at 11173 W. Pico Blvd in Los Angeles. The new Center, which opened in October 2023, provides customized programs and services for local residents, based on population needs and health issues. L.A. Care Health Plan Commits $5 Million to a New Medical Degree Program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science

This new grant is a continuation of L.A. Care’s partnership with CDU through the Elevating the Safety Net initiative. With more than $8.4 million in funding from our initiative, CDU has awarded full scholarships to 16 medical students and has funded residents and faculty salaries while expanding its Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency Programs.

L.A. Care Awards $3.6 Million for Physician Recruitment

L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest publicly-operated health plan in the country, has announced the first round of Provider Recruitment Program grants as part of its Elevating the Safety Net initiative. The mission of the $31 million initiative is to recruit highly-qualified primary care physicians to the Los Angeles County safety net. The safety net is comprised of health care providers who offer access to care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, and whose patient population includes a substantial share of the Medicaid population and the uninsured.

The organization also celebrated by announcing special news of its new, five-year initiative to tackle the homelessness crisis in L.A. County.
