Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and Partners Host Sneak Peek of $70m Magic Johnson Park Renovation and Community Drive-Thru Tour

Supervisor Mark-Ridley-Thomas in collaboration with the LA County Department of Parks and Recreation and a number community partners, hosted a socially-distanced, sneak peek of Earvin “Magic” Johnson Park’s new building facilities and myriad of amenities followed by a “drive thru” tour of the park and resource distribution for 2,500 community members. 

State Sen. Holly Mitchell, MLK CEO Joined Cherished Futures for Black Moms & Babies Workshop for Deep Dive Discussion on Birth Inequities in Los Angeles

The Honorable Holly J. Mitchell delivered opening remarks and discussed SB 464, the California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act. Mitchell shared how she authored the bill and shepherded its passage. She also shared her vision for respectful, equitable maternity care especially for Black mothers, and her steadfast support and call to action for perinatal care providers.

Health Net Partners with Ward AME for Health Fair

Health Net teamed up with Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Health Braintrust, and Ward African Methodist Episcopal Church to host a free Church Community Health Fair on July 31. Congressional Representatives Karen Bass (D-California) and Robin Kelly (D-Illinois) joined Ward members and community members to learn the importance of lifestyle behaviors on health and well-being. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, Watts Health Center and Kindred Community Mental Health Center also participated. The fair offered health screenings including glucose and blood pressure, HIV, mental health, and activities such as Zumba classes, massage stations and giveaways. In addition, many attendees received
