First Ladies Health Initiative Sponsors Back to School Party

  Hundreds of people took advantage of services and resources offered at the Back to School Party sponsored by the First Ladies Health Initiative on July 28. The free event, held at the First Ladies Health House in South L.A., featured free vaccinations for children and free health screenings for adults. Also, 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students. Several health partners and volunteers donated their time and expertise to provide screenings for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and various cancers. First Ladies Unite to Decrease Preventable Illnesses

The First Ladies Health Initiative (FLHI) is proving to be a strong voice for wellness in Southern California. The faith-based outreach program, created by Executive Director Tracey Alston and sponsored by Walgreens, provided health screenings to more than 37,000 people last year. The success of the effort can be traced to the leadership and involvement of the first ladies of several churches in Los Angeles, Inglewood, Pasadena and Orange County.
