Father’s Day Message

Words of the Week – Fine Fathers

Scripture: John 4: 46-54 Brothers and sisters, Father’s Day is here. What a blessing it is to have a day where fathers are honored, respected and celebrated! Let’s pause and give thanks for dads, step dads, foster dads, godfathers and all manner of folks who have been fathering. Not only is a good time to honor dads, it is a good time to encourage some fellas who are being fine fathers and help some of us like me who could benefit from a timely reminder.  I have found a story in the Gospel of John that features a fine father.

A Father’s Favor

Scripture: Genesis 12:1-4 When I was about 12-years-old, I went to my father and told him that I wanted to play organized football in the local park league. He contacted a friend of his, who coached a team and told him of my desire. His friend contacted a friend of his, who had a team that practiced closer to our house and told him that I was interested in playing. Coach Merriweather allowed me to play on his team and we won the league championship. My initial opportunity to play organized football was due in part to my father’s favor.

Nevertheless, we still have so much to be thankful for and I wanted to share this “Open Thank You Letter” for this coming Father’s Day. To all the men who show-up unapologetically, courageously,

Local Pastors Encourage African American Men for Father’s Day

African American fathers play a special role in the life of their children. While America has not always portrayed or treated Black males fairly, to many in their families, they remain number one! In celebration of Father’s Day, the L.A. Sentinel asked three local pastors to respond to the following question: “What spiritual words of encouragement can you share with Black fathers in these challenging times for African American males?” Pastor James K. McKnight, Congregational Church of Christian Fellowship – Los Angeles:  To the brothers in our community who are fine fathers; fathers who love, teach, protect, provide for and
