Solis introduced a motion that passed on Tuesday; the Department of Health Services will lease medical space to respond to health issues in south east Los Angeles. At this new health center there will be primary care providers, nurses, case managers, case navigators, and other caring personnel to provide health services during COVID-19 and after the pandemic.

LASD Anticipates Hiring 160 New Positions to Improve Jail Healthcare

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell plans to seek funding for more than 160 new deputies and support personnel to improve medical and mental healthcare for jail inmates, according to a letter posted on the county’s website Tuesday. McDonnell said his department will need to ramp up hiring to deal with the increased demand for medical appointments as the county’s health agency moves toward a patient-centered model that is proactive and preventative. Board of Supervisors Vote for Improvement of Medical Services for Inmates

  Hoping to improve the medical services provided to jail inmates, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to shift the responsibility from the Sheriff’s Department to the Department of Health Services. The county currently allocates approximately $330 million and over 2,000 positions per year on health, mental health, and public health services to the roughly 17,500 inmates housed in county jails.  Of this amount, $238 million and more than 1,700 budgeted positions are allocated to the Sheriff’s Medical Services Bureau (MSB).  Los Angeles County is the only county in California in which the Sheriff’s Department runs its own
