Potential U.S. Senate Appointee Karen Bass solidifies the idea of Women in Power

Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus Karen Bass has amplified the call for justice countless times within Capitol Hill. The major benchmark Bass headed this year was the drafting and passing of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, unveiled on June 8; a “bold, comprehensive approach to hold police accountable, and change the culture of law enforcement and our communities,” said Bass. Her willfulness to take a wide and powerful stance showed the nation that she is more than qualified for one of the seats as U.S. Senate; Bass represents a new era of women in power.

Police Repression Impacts Communities of Color and Workers

The police attack in Century City took place the year before a more famous LAPD abuse case involving motorist Rodney King. Millions saw the televised video of the police beating Rodney King as he lay on the ground. When the police were acquitted by a mostly white jury, the verdict triggered the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest.

Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove’s Bill to Protect Children with Autism Moves Ahead in the State Legislature with Bipartisan Support

Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove’s (D-Los Angeles) bill, AB 189 (Kamlager-Dove) that would designate autism professionals as mandated reporters passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee  with unanimous support. The bill now heads to the Appropriations Committee. AB 189 clarifies that all Qualified Autism Service Practitioners (QASPs) are considered mandated reporters under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Mandated reporters are people who are required by law to report known or suspected child maltreatment.

20th Annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention Culminates September’s Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month 

Culminating September’s Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services will hold its 20th Annual Alive & Running 5K Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention on Sunday, September 30, 2018 beginning at 7:00 a.m. at West 88th Street & La Tijera Boulevard just north of LAX. (Schedule of Events is listed below).  Actor/filmmaker Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy) will serve as Emcee of the event, which also marks the 60th year that the Suicide Prevention Center has been saving lives.
