Sessions Receives Horace Tapscott Heritage Award

Mikela Session, left, recently received Horace Tapscott Young Musician’s Heritage Award. Maredith Torres, center, and Cecilia Tapscott, widow of Horace, made the presentation during a ceremony at the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum in Culver City. Session, who is a junior at California Institute of the Arts, started playing drums as a toddler. He has performed with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra as well as with his own band. Horace Tapscott was a renowned jazz pianist and composer who founded the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.  He resided in South L.A.’s Angeles Mesa district. He passed away in 1999.
